Payne´s Rise
Payne's Rise in the Upper Yarra Valley is a family run vineyard and winery specialising in small-batch wines produced from carefully selected fruit from their vineyard in Seville, Victoria. It is the realisation of many years of hard work, dedication and passion of Tim and Narelle Cullen.
Payne’s Rise has evolved from a love of and connection with the Yarra Valley, its people, and history. Initial plantings began in 1999 with Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard now consists of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
After growing vines on their unique little property in Seville for 20 years now, Tim and Narelle have learnt how to best harness the expression of their site. The vineyard has a clear voice now and their winemaking aims to capture this and reflect it in pure and honest wines.
Payne's Rise vineyard is incorporated into the 1860’s homestead and property of Seville’s first settler, Thomas Payne. The cellar door gives visitors the opportunity to wander through the original house and outbuildings.
Tim and Narelle invite you to experience first hand the early history of their unique property. Relax under ancient elms and oaks surrounded by the wonderful panorama of the Yarra Valley. Sample their fine wines. Enjoy a gourmet pizza, share platter or specialty coffee and delight in our eclectic mix of old and new.
Franco D'Anna
Franco has been working closely with Tim since 2008.
The winemaking is a simple, traditional approach with no additives or enzymes. Gentle with an oak regime reflective of the season.
Franco D’Anna was born into a family with fair wine credentials, having established and run one of Melbourne’s legendary wine stores since the 1960s. A childhood in wine retail blossomed into a career in winemaking when the family put down some literal roots in the cool of the Upper Yarra Valley in 1997. D’Anna uses the classic Yarra vehicles of chardonnay and pinot noir, plus pinot blanc, to turn out wines of significant sophistication, minus the obvious winemaker trappings – svelte, varietal and deeply characterful.
